Fuel Saving Tips
Fuel Saving Tips
Spring is in the air, and it is time to start planning your road trip. When planning our road trips, we first think of where to go, what we want to do on the way, and what we want to do when we get there. Unfortunately, we don't always think of the best route and how much it will cost. With higher gas prices than in previous years, this should be your first thought. We have some tips to help you save money at the pumps while traveling to your destination.
Maintenance and Good Driving Habits
Ensuring that your RV has been serviced by the manufacturer's recommendations, such as tune-ups, oil changes, changing air filters and checking your tire pressure, will all impact your fuel efficiency. In addition to regular maintenance, good driving habits can significantly affect fuel efficiency. You can burn much fuel by driving aggressively and idling too long. Avoid hard accelerations; jumping on the pedal from a stop and applying the brake early when coming to a halt will reduce your fuel usage. Also, try to avoid congested areas and construction zones during peak times to avoid idling for an extended period.
Plan Your Route
Planning your route ahead of time can help you avoid more congested areas during peak times and possibly construction zones. We understand that you can not always avoid hills and mountains depending on your destination but traveling on a straight flat road will continually improve your gas mileage. You may also consider taking the less traveled road instead of interstates. Maintaining a consistent speed of 50mph helps fuel efficiency, and you never know what roadside attractions you may find on the way.
Mobile Apps and Credit Cards
There are many mobile apps that you can download that will help you locate cheaper gas prices, such as Gas Guru, which is available on the Apple store and Google Play. Yellow Pages owns Gas Guru, which allows you to find cheaper gas prices, search by gas or fuel type, save your favorite gas stations to find out their current prices and locate stations that offer ATMs, restaurants, etc., and that are open 24hrs. In addition to apps, you can take advantage of deals and discounts that credit cards offer. NerdWallet supplies consumers with a list of the best gas credit cards monthly. Another little tip is, do not wait until your gas light comes on to find a gas station because the stations right off the interstate are typically higher. Pull over and use your App to find the best prices.
Driving Another Vehicle
When towing a travel trailer or fifth wheel, you have another vehicle to drive around in for your short trips around, like to the grocery store or any attractions around your destination that you want to do. Driving A Class or Class C is not convenient for your daily excursions, so you may want to trailer your car with either a tow dolly or a flat trailer.
